THE CONTINUED QUEST FOR ACCOUNTABILITY IN STATE GOVERNMENT

H.3047, "The Spending Accountability Act of 2009", requires the House and Senate to hold a roll call vote on every new law passed. If we are to hold our Legislators accountable, we need to know how they vote. H.3047 passed unanimously in the House on 3/26/10, and has been stalled in a Senate Judiciary subcommittee since 4/6/10.

On 4/22/10 Senator Tom Davis made a motion to recall H.3047 from Senator Larry Martin's subcommittee and bring it to the floor of the Senate for a vote. Senators McConnell, Larry Martin, and Knotts voiced strong opposition to recalling the bill. Senators McConnell and Martin called this bill "a fad". Senator Knotts stated that the bill is "insulting to the Senate". Senator Martin stated that there will be a subcommittee hearing on H.3047, and Senator Davis withdrew the motion for a recall. The three members of the subcommittee are Senators Larry Martin, Knotts, and Ford, therefore it is doubtful that the bill will pass out of committee.

All South Carolinians who think Accountability is not a fad should: 1)Call your Senator and urge him to support/vote for H.3047 and 2) Attend the Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing on May 5th.
